Biomimetic Antifreeze for Concrete
2019
Concrete, poly(ethylene glycol)-graft-poly(vinyl alcohol)
Loan of Wil V. Srubar III, Mohammad Matar and the Living Materials Laboratory to Last Library
Inspired by natural antifreeze proteins produced by Arctic and Antarctic bacteria, insects, fish and plants, this project explores the use of biomimetic antifreeze polymers --- molecules that bind to small ice crystals to keep them small --- as an additive to prevent damage due to freeze-thaw cycling of concrete. --- Wil V.
